Sheffield mail centre officially opens

Last week, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Peter Rippon, joined senior management and invited guests to celebrate the official opening of the newly extended Sheffield mail centre.

The Lord Mayor also unveiled a special commemorative plaque to mark the occasion of the £25 million investment in the plant. It forms part of the £2.8 billion invested between 2006-07 and the end of 2012-13 in our transformation programme across the UK.

Transformation

In November 2010, we announced our decision to transfer mail processing from both Doncaster and Hull mail centres to an extended Sheffield mail centre.

The centre now processes, on average, around 18 million items per week. It is becoming the largest collection hub in the UK, collecting from over 7,200 collection points daily.

Working together

Working with the CWU and CMA Unite Union, we have been able to transform the site in Sheffield into the fourth largest mail centre (by mail volume) in the UK.

Chief operations officer, Sue Whalley, says: ‘We are delighted that the Lord Mayor of Sheffield has officially opened the newly extended Sheffield mail centre.

‘This work represents a £25 million investment to modernise Royal Mail operations in South Yorkshire and shows our commitment to the city of Sheffield. This will benefit both customers and staff alike.

‘The new extension to Sheffield mail centre enables us to modernise. For example, ithouses the latest state-of-the- art mail-sorting machines. We are pleased to play an important role in the local economy of Sheffield and look forward to helping the area prosper for many years to come.’
