Royal Mail U-turn on parcel collection points is a "triumph for common sense", Gloucester MP says

RESIDENTS will no longer need to traipse across the city for their parcels following a Royal Mail U-turn which has been described as a “triumph for common sense”.

Nearly 2,000 Tuffley and Grange residents were forced to take a 40-minute round trip to pick up missed post in Brockworth instead of their original collection point less than a mile away in Quedgeley.

The Royal Mail has confirmed it will reinstate a Quedgeley collection point in August due to the demand from locals.

Leighton Burman, delivery sector manager for the Royal Mail, said: “We acknowledge the strength of feeling locally about the preferred location for collection of undelivered mail and is currently scoping the viability of returning items to Quedgeley for collection the following day.

“Once complete, our aim is to commence a six-month trial of the service from August 1 which will be reviewed on a monthly basis to ensure it meets our customers’ and business requirements.”

The Royal Mail reorganised the way it processes mail by postcode and decided all GL4 addresses should be serviced from Brockworth.

Gloucester MP Richard Graham posted a survey to homeowners asking them to make their views on the changes known. Mr Graham received around 2,000 responses from people who believed the changes were logical for residents in Hucclecote and Abbeymead but not for people living in Tuffley and Grange.

Tuffley resident Ryan Thomas told the Citizen that it was “unacceptable” to have to make a 40-mile trip to collect post from a depot at Hurricane Road, Brockworth, instead of Quedgeley’s Olympus Park which is less than a mile from his home.

Mr Graham said: “I welcome Royal Mail's reversal. My survey showed residents were almost unanimously in favour of collecting parcels from Quedgeley, which on average is five miles closer to them than Brockworth; full credit to Royal Mail for having listened and changing their operations to allow for this.”

But he said this might not be the end of the issue.

He added: “Residents of Elmbridge and Longlevens have the flip side of the changes to deal with; they now collect from Quedgeley but it would be quicker for them to revert to Brockworth.”

Mr Graham will now work with Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson, who represents Longlevens, on a similar survey areas affected by the latest changes.
