An MP has backed posties at a Royal Mail branch over their refusal to deliver free copies of The Sun.

Rosie Cooper, West Lancs MP, has written to both the Sun editor and Royal Mail CEO in a bid to remove roughly 50 posties at the Skelmersdale delivery office from the paper’s free World Cup promotion this week.

The Skem posties are refusing to deliver over its coverage of the Hillsborough tragedy .

Miss Cooper – whose constituency covers Skem – said: “I wholly support the action of Skelmersdale postal workers in refusing to deliver this publication and I believe any attempt by Royal Mail to force their staff to do so would be a real strain on the integrity of the postal service.

“I hope the Royal Mail will change its stance and show some integrity and most of all show some respect for the people of Skelmersdale and across West Lancashire who have lived with the lies and injustice promulgated by this newspaper in one of the darkest episodes in recent British history.”

Royal Mail said requests not to deliver the paper will be considered on a “case by case basis”.

Sally Hopkins, Royal Mail spokesperson, said: “The Sun has chosen not to include Liverpool in the mailing. If there are any personal reasons why a postman or woman would not want to deliver the mailing, we would consider these on an case by case basis working closely with the CWU.”

A statement from The Sun read: “The Sun understands the strength of feeling in Liverpool and has taken steps to avoid causing upset by exempting Merseyside postcodes from the free paper drop. The delivery of this paper in Skelmersdale is a matter for the Royal Mail in consultation with the relevant union.”

But one worried postie said believed the paper would still end up being delivered in the town, where many consider themselves as Scousers..

He added: “ We don’t think that Royal Mail understand. There was no shock from them at all when we said that we won’t do it. There were six post men at the branch who were at Hillsborough.”

The ECHO understands Wirral’s postal delivery offices will not be delivering the paper except for the Ellesmere Port and Neston branches.

But it is also believed that there will be a meeting tomorrow which will try to make sure that the Ellesmere Port and Neston offices won’t have to make any deliveries and to resolve the issues there.

One Merseyside Communication Workers Union member, who did not want to be named, said: “I don’t understand the Royal Mail’s thinking in the first place. Wirral delivery offices won’t be delivering it but there are question marks over Ellesmere Port and Neston.

“The CWU have been told that no one will be disciplined if they don’t deliver it.”

The imminent delivery has sparked outrage across the region, with 8,000 people having signed a petition on website Change.org entitled “Refuse to Deliver Free Copies [of] the S*N Newspaper to Every home in the UK”.
