In research to see what it was like to be a postal worker North Ayrshire Labour MP Katy Clark took to the streets of Largs with a postbag!

North Ayrshire and Arran MP Katy Clark experienced what is involved in delivering the post when she joined local postman Graeme Bone on his delivery round in Largs.

Ms Clark is one of a number of local MPs and MSPs being invited to go out with postmen and women across Scotland to see the lengths Royal Mail goes to, to deliver the post.

The purpose of the visits is to give MPs and MSPs a unique insight into the challenges of delivering mail to every house and business in their constituency, six days a week.

Billy Rumbold, Royal Mail delivery manager, who briefed Ms Clark before she set off on her walk, said: “We’re delighted that Ms Clark is taking the time to experience the every day challenges faced by our delivery postmen and women.

“The visit gave us the opportunity to show Ms Clark how we are modernising and transforming the organisation. We are investing in new sorting and delivery equipment as we respond to the changing nature of the modern postbag. We are delivering more parcels and fewer letters than ever before and the tools for the job need to reflect that.”

Ms Clark said: “Postmen and women perform an incredibly important function in our communities, not just delivering communication, but being one of the institutions in society that binds us together for the common good.”

“I wanted to get a real understanding of the work that goes into delivering the mail on a daily basis. There can be no better way of getting that insight than actually going out and doing the job alongside a delivery postman.

I joined local postman Graeme Bone who has been delivering mail to customers in Largs for more than ten years.”

Royal Mail is currently transforming its operation, which means every part of the process from collecting, transporting, sorting and delivering the mail is being improved to increase efficiency.

Didn't Alan Johnson have something to do with Royal Mail? I get the impression that it's something he isn't keen to talk about but didn't he have a relative (a cousin maybe?) who worked as a postie?

No he himself was a Postie, and a CWU Rep and did Billys job before him.

No. Respectfully, you're wrong. No one who was a postie (or the head of the CWU) could ever have gotten Parliament to take us private. But yeah, my memory is playing me tricks about that as well.

Maybe he has a nephew with a similar name or something?

Alan Johnson was definitely a postie, and yes he did Billy's job, and I think billy hopes if he manages to get us to stick with the Labour Party long enough, for them to get back into power, they might give home a nice seat on the gravy train.

When it says "took to the streets of Largs with a postbag!" does that literally mean delivering one bag? She does realise a post round is actually larger than that?

EDIT: Reading it again, it says "she joined local postman Graeme Bone on his delivery round in Largs" so it sounds like she walked round while the regular postman delivered. So she followed someone while they delivered a bag of mail? Did she also go to the delivery office and see all the work that goes on before people go on delivery? Sorting, prep, putting together door to doors, not to mentions taking part of a collapsed walk...
