Royal Mail set to announce slowdown in parcels business in first full-year results since privatisation

Royal Mail is set to announce a slowdown in its parcels business at its maiden set of full-year results since privatisation.

The postal business had hoped that the growth of parcel deliveries, spurred on by an increasing demand for internet shopping, would balance out the falling number of letters sent.

The group’s revenues are expected to rise from £9.15bn to £9.44bn over the year, according to a consensus of analyst forecasts.

The number of letters sent is expected to fall by between 4 per cent and 6 per cent.

hardly surprising realy. so many firms want a bit of the action nowdays. letters side is dying off and probley be gone in 5 years time

maybe their planning on telling us we will have to do extra outside,with letters and parcels declining.when I started the job I had 2 bags of mail,now its 7 bags,hope it doesn't decline too much more.

RM really shot itself in the foot with last years price hike, customers who normally wouldn't have bothered started looking at price comparison sites and the services offered by other carriers. At the budget end of the market Hermes and Collect+ started to offer better more reliable services with such features as Track and Trace as standard. UPS now have a network of local retail outlets where parcels can be dropped off which offers a reliable services at an excellent price while DPD are probably the market leaders at this point in time in terms of QofS.

The market is developing with despatch and receipt customers demanding a service that offers convenience at a reasonable price point. Secure postal lockers are becoming more popular and there is now a need for more communication and choice in terms of delivery time requiring carriers to be more innovative and flexible .... 2 of the attributes that the business often struggles with. On the plus side RM has an excellent logistic network and vast processing capability, although packet automation has yet to realise it's potential, it 'just' needs dynamic leadership.

I really wish this was clarified as to whether it simply means 'stamped letters sent' or 'all letters sent' because we're delivering pretty much the same amount of letters as we were 3 years ago.

If only RM would operate like a private business and not British Leyland, we need to have a meeting ,oh we need a meeting to decide the date of a meeting ,then another meeting to decide what we can talk about ,and so on ,with Management and Union so far removed from the front line, and so many jobs for the boys.

Even if there is a true decline in both letters and parcels the overall workload is still excess of the daily contract hours for many, if doing the scheduled amount of IPS/porteering/packet sorting; starting at correct time; taking paid breaks; using delivery methods correctly etc.

Can't say I personally arrive each morning now jumping for joy at how early I'm going to finish compared to last year, all that's changed is I need a bit less overtime to complete or cut-off not quite so much to finish on time.

Is tracked important? I get books and the odd t-shirt/whatever through the post. As long as it's cheap and comes quick, I don't care.

Than again, I'm weird. Do most e-bay folk want tracked?

30 % packets down in our delivery office and out of 75 deliveries .... 7 laps deliveries every day from next month.
