Help please - osteo arthritis

Hi,

I've just been diagnosed with osteo arthritis in my hip, I've been off work for the last two weeks and the doctor has today signed me off for another two weeks and I'm due to see an Orthopaedic Surgeon in May. My manager is hassling me to come back to work but I cant complete my delivery at this point and he's mention IHR.

Can anyone tell me where I stand, the last thing I want to do is retire. I want to get sorted out and back to work as soon as I possibly can, I just feel I'm being pushed out.

You say that you have been off for two weeks with another two weeks to come,then as your manager has mentioned IHR he will certainly refer you to ATOS (or whatever they are called now),you can expect a telephone interview and then they will decide/recommend what course of action to take.At this stage I wouldn't worry about it too much for eg they may suggest a return to work but on light duties but do not rush back just because your manager is hassling you.

If your past attendance is satisfactory then your manager is being premature on mentioning IHR as it is not his decision to recommend IHR at this stage and his medical knowledge would be limited to say the least. Would have expected your manager to refer you to RM Occupational Health Provider OH Assist ( formally known as ATOS ) for their prognosis and to judge how they can assist you in a return to work. Initially you will receive the standard 20 minute telephone interview for them to assess in the type of work you carry out at RM and formulate a rehabilitation programme and if there is another function within your unit that you are quite capable of completing without further aggravating your present medical condition. My recommendation is that you demand a face to face interview in preference to the telephone interview so that an accurate diagnosis can be established and that you are copied in to their medical report that you may need in the future. On your appointment with the Orthopaedic Surgeon who is a specialist in your condition you can request a written report which can be forwarded to OH Assist. If you are still being hassled to return to work by management make contact with your union rep so situation can be monitored.
