What's the best way of us customers helping, then?

Answer their questions when they ask why you are striking that seems to help. However, I do sense a wind change in the reporting of the strikes in the national press, some that have been solidly against us now seem to be printing our view point at least.

Another good idea is to write into local and national newspapers putting your point of view forward.

Hand out flyers on the picket line.

There's loads we can do at grass routes. Leave the national approach to the union is my best advice.

Have the union organised a hardship fund btw? How about collections?

Ours has one at branch level and our sandwiches and coffees on the picket are usually either brought with donations or even donated.

As a member of the public I can tell you that most of us can work around your official strikes and are sympathetic to your situation. What we don't like to see is the unofficial action - it gives us the impression that your union is losing control and that you don't much care about customers including those waiting for pay cheques (my hubby hasn't been paid this week because his time sheet posted last week didn't get to his employer in time) and small struggling businesses that are dependent upon the mail. We were all ready for the 2 lots of 48 hour strikes and we are all braced for rolling strikes next week but now that there is unofficial action we haven't a clue what is going on and whether to post stuff or not. If you kept it official and above board I think you'd get more public support, as it stands people are fed up with those who have effectively taken the law into their own hands and support could start to falter. Please get back to doing this legally then no-one can accuse you of being wrong.

Only certain parts of the country are out on unofficial action so unless you are served by one of those the post should be ok. If you don't want to say which area you live in on the board please PM and I'll do my best to find out if your affected.
