Royal Mail has announced it will have completed the closure of two delivery offices by early next year.
The Campbell Street office in Leicester and Swan House, in Meridian East industrial estate, will start to transfer work to the main processing centre in Centurion Way, Meridian Business Park, in May.
The moves follow a review of the service in 2011 and subsequent restructuring plan, which the Royal Mail described as "one of the biggest transformation programmes in UK industry".
It cited a huge decline in the volume of parcels and letters as the reason for reorganisation, including sorting Leicestershire's mail 35 miles away in Northampton.
Paul Whitehouse, Royal Mail delivery director for Leicester, said: "We have started talking to our people about the move.
"The relocation of these offices is part of Royal Mail's ongoing transformation programme and is vital to put our business on a sound, secure and sustainable footing for the future.
"Our service to customers will continue to be a top priority during these changes and further details will be available in advance of the moves.
"Customers can be reassured we will do all we can to minimise disruption to customers and ensure we maintain the high level of service they expect and deserve from Royal Mail."
Three hundred staff have taken voluntary redundancy or been given new roles within the company as a result of the restructuring.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has been involved in the process since the start.
Leicester branch secretary Mark Greenhill said: "At the moment, the new mail centre isn't finished so I'm not sure about it being ready for May.
"As for the people who'll be moving, we still don't know much about the structure or their duties, so we've got those negotiations to come."
Mr Greenhill said the move could affect delivery times as city centre postmen and women would have further to go to collect their daily post.
"Swan House is just round the corner from the new distribution centre, so that won't be affected much," he said.
"But the Campbell Street staff will have to travel an extra five-and-a-half miles, so delivery times might change."
When the centre in Centurion Way is open, post will be collected and taken there before being shipped to Northampton.
It will be sorted, sent back to Centurion Way and then delivered to homes.
"It's madness," said Mr Greenhill.
"But we'll still manage to get it all done in one day."

Re: Campbell Street and Swan House delivery offices to close
Hinckley DO and I believe Wigston DO are supposed to be moving to this processing centre as well, we were told about our move three years ago but still nothing has happened, HInckley is 10.5 miles down the road.
