HUNDREDS of letters, packages and even a birthday card containing money were set alight on Friday near the Blue Lagoon Nature Reserve, Bletchley.
Firefighters were called to the ‘hot mail’ at 11.55am and confirmed with MKWeb that they saw direct mail, packages and even a birthday card with money in it.
A spokesman from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue said: “I spoke to the crews this morning who said they could see hundreds of letters for Milton Keynes addresses.
“They even saw the birthday card with money but put in bags what they could after the fire was extinguished.”
Police confirmed they are investigating after they attended the site on Friday. Arson is suspected by officers but currently no arrests have been made.
A Royal Mail spokesperson also confirmed that they were aware of the incident.
They said: “Mail due for delivery from the Kiln Farm Delivery Office was damaged. Regretfully the items are undeliverable due to the damage sustained in the fire and the water damage. We apologise to any customer whose mail has been affected by this incident.
“We are currently investigating this matter. Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty.
“It is a criminal offence to tamper with or delay the delivery of mail and anyone caught doing so will face serious disciplinary measures. The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to this business.
“Any customer who has any concerns about their mail service should contact Royal Mail Customer Services on 08457 740740.”
This is the fourth suspected arson this month at the reserve as firefighters have had to extinguish more than 60 square meters of grassland set alight.
A spokesperson for Milton Keynes Council said: “If anyone has ever seen anything suspicious in this area please report it to us or the police on 101.”
