Royal Mail is demonstrating its commitment to rural areas by trialling 4x4 vehicles at offices across Wales.

Staff at eight offices in Wales are putting a dozen 4x4 vehicles through their paces at delivery offices with remote rural rounds to make deliveries safer and more reliable.

The vehicles are based at offices with some of the most challenging rural terrain in Wales at Aberystwyth, Bala, Caernarfon, Craven Arms, Dolgellau, Ludlow, Newtown and Welshpool.

Glyn Davies MP, joined postman Carl Danson from Newtown Delivery Office on delivery to see the vehicle put through its paces first hand.

Glyn Davies MP said, “It’s great that Royal Mail has introduced these vehicles to deliver services when weather conditions are difficult. The new Land Rover based at Newtown will ensure the mail gets through where snow and ice would stop the usual post vans from operating. Most of all, the new Land Rover demonstrates Royal Mail’s commitment to delivering as reliable a service as possible.”

Postman Carl Danson from Newtown delivery office says: ‘A vehicle like this is indispensible for our more rural runs. Many of the tracks are rutted and it used to damage the vans as they had such low ground clearance. We deliver mail six days a week and our vehicle maintenance requirements have noticeably reduced. Ironically, it’s not the ice and snow we’ve had to contend with this winter, it’s the rain!”

All the drivers using the 4x4s are giving monthly feedback and evaluation. If the trial proves successful, a 4x4 option could be incorporated into future vehicle specifications at relevant sites.

We had a Land Rover at our office about 20 years ago. It was 15 years and fun to drive (but the heating was crap in winter).
