The membership ballot over whether to accept the agreement the CWU union has reached with Royal Mail was due to end on Wednesday of this week.

The union has recommended the deal.

It said the deal gives workers five years protection on pay and job security, and a 9.06 percent pay deal over three years.

But the deal also talks of “building a climate of sustainable trust with a can do culture” and “improving efficiency”.

This means increased workloads and stress for workers.

Many post workers are angry that the agreement signals the end of the union’s fight against privatisation.

“It will be full steam ahead for privatisation now” said Paul Garraway, a post worker in Oxford.

“We’ll have to have this ‘can do’ attitude. And although we have the money, they’ll just throw that back at us.”

The current agreement will be reviewed again in 2019, so the agreement is effectively a no-strike deal for five years.

“The government will do what they like now,” said Paul. “They’ll be back for the pay.
