Following a formal consultation, Post Office Ltd have announced that Hastings Crown Post Office on Cambridge Road will close in March 2014.

Postal services are due to be transferred to the WHSmith store in Priory Meadow Shopping Centre. It is not yet clear how many jobs will be lost.

Sarah Owen, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Hastings and Rye, organised a postcard petition last year and handed over 6000 cards against the proposal to Post Office bosses and is very disappointed with the news.

She said, “This makes a total mockery of the word ‘consultation’. Thousands of Hastings people signed my petition and Post Office Ltd have chosen to disregard their wishes. This is a clear downgrade of our postal services, a downgrade of accessibility for disabled customers and a downgrade to our town centre.”

In their press release, Post Office Ltd acknowledge the strength of feeling opposing the move. They say, “We received a number of comments from individual customers and local representatives during the local public consultation period. We also received three petitions, as well as pre-printed customer comment cards…”
