HULL: Postal workers have rallied together to collect food for Hull Foodbank to help it meet demand over the Christmas period.

The collection, organised by the Communication Workers Union, managed to raise £544, which was spent on food donated to the bank.

Andy Parrish, a branch secretary for the union, said: "As postmen, we are out on the streets and in the communities. We see the hardship."

The idea for the collection came after postal workers received a Christmas bonus.

Mr Parrish said: "We thought, wouldn't it be nice if we could just raise something out of that extra money? Let's give something back to people in our communities."

As well as the usual fare of pasta and tinned food, they also donated festive treats, such as mince pies, chocolate and biscuits.

Mr Parrish said the union was grateful to management, which donated postal vehicles to allow the workers to collect and then deliver the food.

He said they would have been happy with £100, so the total "completely exceeded expectations".
