SWANSEA mail centre workers are working through a bumper festive mail bag of over 800,000 items on its busiest week.

Royal Mail bosses have said this week is the busiest week the centre sees as it deals with customers’ festive greetings, online shopping orders and Christmas parcels.

Brian Davies, Swansea mail centre manager, said during December the centre takes on 120 temporary staff.

This is in addition to the 320 staff they have working the rest of the year.

And he said the quality would not be the same without the temporary staff.

He said: “This week is the busiest one of the whole year and no other week touches it.

“We take on a lot more staff and would not manage without them.

“We aim to have everything delivered by Christmas and are currently hitting all the targets.

“This year there are a lot more parcels to process which is more labour intensive.”

Tony Fox, operations director, said: “We are seeing the massive seasonal increase in volumes again this year.

“We love parcels and once again this Christmas our customers clearly enjoy ordering and sending them.

“Everyone here is committed to delivering a first class Christmas and we will be working hard right up until Christmas Eve.

“No one else works harder at this time of the year in every single village, town and city across the country.

Royal Mail also has a main Christmas parcel sort centre in Llantrisant, employing over 250 temporary staff.

The last recommended posting for First Class mail is today (Friday, December 20) and for Second Class was Wednesday, December 18 to ensure delivery in time for Christmas.

Important items can be posted using special delivery up until December 23.
