Re: Royal Mail Christmas Casual - Breaks
Last year, as an Xmas casual contracted to RM, I worked an eight hour shift with a forty minute break, thirty of which were unpaid. This was a night shift at a mail centre, if that makes any difference.

Re: Royal Mail Christmas Casual - Breaks
These are the breaks contained in the Royal Mail Handbook For Angard Staff - see the stickie in this forum. These are the breaks that Angard casuals (pre-AWR qualification) are supposed to have. These "breaks" are usually the time removed from hours worked in your pay (Angard casuals pre-AWR qualification).mahrm1 wrote:Hello all,

They are not the breaks that apply to RM Casuals, RM permanents and Angard casuals (once AWR qualified). Some places enforce them (or try to) and some allow the Royal Mail breaks. Indeed in some places some shifts try to enforce them others use RM breaks.
Note: the legal minimum break for 6 hours worked is 20 minutes - hence the above break of 15 minutes becomes illegal once you get to 6 hours. See government websites about legislation on break times and working hours.

Re: Royal Mail Christmas Casual - Breaks
I always understood the legal minimum was fifteen minutes for four hours work which would make upto five hours with no break illegal as well?

The only ruling given by the government is 20 minutes for 6 hours.

Re: Royal Mail Christmas Casual - Breaks
So once an Angard employee has qualified for AWR they should be PAID for all breaks? Because the breaks have continued to be unpaid, removed from time sheet hours, since qualifying. Because its been going on for months since the 12 weeks passed - it seems to be the "norm" - maybe they don't realise after 12 weeks they are suppose to leave breaks in.Verging wrote:These are the breaks contained in the Royal Mail Handbook For Angard Staff - see the stickie in this forum. Also, don't Angard staff get more than Royal Mail per hour and this is suppose to balance the removal of breaks and no uniform?
Can you or anyone confirm this?

Re: Royal Mail Christmas Casual - Breaks
AWR qualified workers should get paid breaks after 12 weeks. They should also get the same amount and length of breaks as the regulars.

After 12 weeks in the same job with the same hirer
If you qualify, you’re entitled to the same basic terms and conditions as if you had been recruited directly, including:
basic pay, including holiday pay, overtime and bonuses linked to your performance
working time – eg not having to work more than 48 hours a week if comparable workers don’t have to
annual leave - you may get extra pay to cover this if it’s above your legal entitlement
night work
rest breaks and rest periods
paid time off for antenatal appointments
It doesn’t matter if you are working full time or part time.
