Doubts over Royal Mail plans in Wrexham

Questions remain over the future of Wrexham's Royal Mail estate, the town's MP Ian Lucas said today.

Following reports earlier in the year that the Royal Mail could sell off large partsof its estate following its privatisation by the Government, Mr Lucas wrote to both the Royal Mail and Ministers asking for assurances about the future ofWrexham's Royal Mail estate, particularly the delivery office on Regent Street in the town.

He has now received a three-sentence reply from the Royal Mail, which - while itstates that the company wants to keep a "nationwide network" of sites as part of its estate - does not make any firm commitment to keeping a presence in Wrexham.

Mr Lucas has said that the "partial" answer leaves questions unanswered about what might happen in the months following privatisation.

He said: "The Royal Mail have said they want a national network, and I would hopethat keeping their premises in the largest town in North Wales would be part oftheir plans.

"However, it is concerning that a direct question about the future of the Royal MailEstate in the town receives just three sentences in reply - and that none of those sentences commits to keeping services in Wrexham.

"Such a partial reply raises questions about the future intentions of a fully-privatised Royal Mail - a business which would be run for the benefit of its shareholders, rather than its customers.

"I will continue to push the Royal Mail to keep services in Wrexham."
