PAINSWICK postmistress, Karen Judd, has appeared in court and denied stealing parcels from Royal Mail.

The 42-year-old of New Street pleaded not guilty to six counts of theft at Gloucester Crown Court today.

She denied taking parcels of clothes, jewellery, a carriage and mobile phones.

Defending Roger Carne told the court Judd denied stealing anything and therefore believed it must have been someone else.

The prosecutor said because of the ‘deflection’ element of her case, other Royal Mail employees would be needed as witnesses.

She is accused of stealing six postal packages containing clothes between September 24, last year and March 6, 2013; the theft of a special delivery parcel of jewellery on December 12 and December 17; taking a mobile phone between January 1, 2013 and February 1, 2013 and the carriage clock on February 20, this year.

She also denied the theft of a skirt on March 4, 2013; a Blackberry phone and 65 Canadian Dollars on March 5 and an iPad Nano and 25 Euros on March 6.

Judd took over the post office in 2009, but it closed in March this year.

It is houses in building which dates back to 1428 and is said to be the oldest property in England to house a post office.

The four day trial is expected to take place on April 22 next year.

Judd was released on unconditional bail.
