Our office is changing the way we select our annual leave and this will probably mean that I may not get any school holidays as leave picks. As my wife is a schoolteacher and I have an 8 year old at school what can i do to ensure that I get holidays with them ?

Without a description of these its impossible to say if we can even offer advice, never mind give you a get out clause.

If you don't get any weeks off in the summer hols maybe your wife could get the 2 weeks before they break up off!
As it's an exceptional circumstance perhaps the school may allow her to do this as an 8 year old won't be doing any exams or anything in July will they?

There's no chance of that happening. My cousin is a school teacher and has more holiday time than he can handle now !
Ask for another two weeks ?

Nice try, bahia. There is no way a teacher will be allowed to take holidays early. They are always trying to discourage parents from taking holidays at school times; regardless of whether the kids are learning or not. They are supposed to be learning.

Moreover, everyone will be wanting to do the same. In addition, this is not an exceptional situation. There is no reason why anyone should expect to get a particular time off for holidays; if it can be accommodated, then fine for walk and life balance et all.

The poster will just have to accept that the missus will enjoy her full holiday and from time to time he will not be part of that holiday.

The 8 year old is not exactly going to be left on his/her own. There are people in worse jobs that rarely get a holiday with family.

* I am neutral on the subject and I am not like judgee but having children is not a panacea for having special treatment...

** My holidays are rarely in the summer or holiday times - just to say.

YEAH YEAH...i have heard all that nonsense before, we had to go through this , we had to go through that...blah blah blah, firstly 2 wrongs do not make a right, secondly the 'Senior man' gets the full six weeks holiday entitlement, he gets to pick a duty it seems as and when he likes, and he picks whatever holiday he chooses, he doesnt get asked to put out the d2d, he doesnt get asked to throw off other peoples d2d....shall i go on??? You could have an individual who is inept, rude, timekeeping is poor, sickness is poor, attitude is poor, but because he has managed to survive being sacked for 20years he gets rewarded....what a wonderful corrupt system.

There have been years when I couldn't get a week off during the six weeks school summer holidays, so it's just a case of making the most of Easter or half terms.
