POSTAL chiefs are working to address major issues caused by scam mail on the back of a campaign by the area’s MP.
Royal Mail chiefs accepted that scam mail was a ‘serious and damaging problem’ in South Derbyshire on the back of persistent lobbying by MP Heather Wheeler.
She confirmed that Royal Mail is keen to continue and extend its work with specialist fraud officers from the Met Police, to address the issue, which was one of her many suggestions to try and counter the rising problem.
The Tory has also pushed for postal workers to do more to try and ease the burden on members of the public.
Mrs Wheeler said: “The Queen’s post should not be interrupted, however given that the mail is clearly recognisable, and is not just a marketing communication, it would be reasonable to suggest that post office workers could ask senior managers to assess this damaging mail.
“This suggestion has gained national support from many other MPs and the public.”
Her campaign has received support from policy makers in Downing Street, as well as many MPs and members of the public.
Mrs Wheeler received a number of complaints from her constituents regarding scam mail, which was being posted to vulnerable people in her community.
On hearing the numerous cases of fraud and expropriation of money from unsuspecting victims, Mrs Wheeler took up a key role in the campaign to stop scam mail.
Mrs Wheeler met with senior Royal Mail executives only days ago to discuss a range of issues focused around the campaign, its motivations, the damage scam mail can cause and its aspirations.
The MP previously revealed that one of her constituents, an elderly man, lost £7,000 in a year to the scammers, who bombarded him with up to seven letters a week.
