Strike-happy trade union barons at Unite relax at château

Bosses at the trade union Unite can enjoy fine dining while reading the 'Morning Star' at its £100million country house in Surrey.

Post Office customers wondering where the trade union barons who called the strike last week go in their spare time need look no further.

The Labour Party paymasters at Unite visit a Grade II-listed country house in Surrey that is owned by the union.

Esher Place is a £100million property where the union bosses can stay in one of 52 bedrooms.

They can browse free copies of the Morning Star and enjoying fine dining in the restaurant, or relax in the extensive lounge and bars.

The residence is billed as being “modelled on a French château”, although Unite, which has donated £9.2 million to the Labour Party since Ed Miliband
became leader, claims that it is used merely for “residential courses and training”.

However, on its website, it advertises weekend breaks at Esher Place for officials, playing on its proximity to various attractions including racing at Sandown Park, the Hampton Court Flower Show, and “London Sights, Shows and Shopping”.

Dawn Anderson, a Unite official, praised the dining at Esher Hall, saying recently: “The food is wonderful!”

Hunt’s father completes his final tour of duty

Less than two weeks before he was due to mark his 83rd birthday, Admiral Sir Nicholas Hunt has died.

The father of Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, died peacefully at his home in Surrey after a short illness.

Sir Nicholas was a former aide-de-camp to the Queen who rose through the ranks of the Navy to become commander-in-chief fleet.

After retiring in 1987, he was deputy managing director at Eurotunnel and held part-time roles including chairman of the South West Surrey District Health
Authority and chairman of Nuffield Hospitals.

He was also chairman of Ferrero UK, which sells Ferrero Rocher chocolates.

His son referred to his father’s healthcare experience in his speech to the Conservative Party conference last year when he described him as an “NHS manager”.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
