A group of Angus posties are delivering their support to help raise money to buy specialist equipment for a colleague’s son.
The staff at the Carnoustie delivery office are swapping their postbags for football boots to take part in a fundraising match.
They are hoping to raise enough money to buy a specialist bike worth around £1,200 for fellow postman John Cumming’s young son Ben.
The 10-year-old has had severe epilepsy since he was 13 months old, and is also unable to walk or talk, requiring assistance on daily activities.
John, 48, from Monifieth, said: “I’d just mentioned to someone at work that we were saving for the bike. I’m not the type of person that likes to go and ask — but they just said to the boss what was happening.
“They organised this, without telling me at first, and it has snowballed from there. Everyone has been so generous and we had an anonymous donation of £500. It has been unbelievable.
“It will be good to get Ben on the bike and see him enjoying himself — we’re trying to make things the best for him that we possibly can.”
Craig Dorward, delivery office manager, said the team were keen to do something to help.
He said: “Ben goes to Kingspark School in Dundee and he really gets a lot of enjoyment out of using the specially adapted bikes there.
“John was trying to do something to raise funds to get a bike for him and we wanted to help. I couldn’t think of a better cause.
“I spoke to all of the staff in the office and everyone was really supportive.”
The team are now planning to take on their colleagues from Arbroath in a charity football match.
Mr Dorward said: “We are not athletes to say the least but we wanted to just have a bit of fun and try and raise as much money as possible. The staff in Arbroath have been really supportive too.
“The bike that John is looking to get for Ben is around £1,200 so we would love to raise as much as possible. We would love for people to come along and show their support on the day.”
The fundraiser is being played at 10.30am on August 25 at the Carnoustie Rec, on Newton Road.
