Last mile of Richard Burton 10k to be named after Cwmavon postman

A RACE named after one of Port Talbot's greatest actors will also pay tribute to a Cwmavon postie.

This year the last stretch of the Richard Burton 10k race will be named the Mathew Mizen Mile.

Mathew, aged 25, from Heol Crwys in Cwmavon, died in Singleton Hospital in January 2009 following health problems linked to an undetected lymphoma.

Since then his family and friends have formed the Mathew Mizen Foundation to raise money for community causes.

This year the race will take place on Sunday, November 3 — to coincide with the month of Burton's birthday.

It was earlier this year that Tata Steel employees Sean Tobin and Graham Rowland decided to bring back the race after the original race committee retired.

Mr Rowland said they had been looking at naming parts of the race after people in the village, much like they had done with the Bwystfil y Bryn race, which they also organise.

"One of the committee members is close friends with Mathew's dad Rhidian, and he asked him and his wife about naming the mile after him," he said.

"Hopefully the event will help raise the profile of the charity named after him."
