Peterborough Royal Mail sorting office staff continue industrial action

Monday 9.30am: Royal Mail staff at the Werrington sorting office in Peterborough have not returned to work following industrial action which started on Friday.

About 200 staff walked out of the sorting office at Papyrus Road on Friday morning.

Andy Beeby, Peterborough branch chairman of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), said there had been a disciplinary issue early on Friday.

He said: “Union officials were in discussion with management throughout Friday, and have started meetings again today.

“But staff have not returned to work yet.”

Deliveries in the PE1, PE3, PE4, PE5, PE6 areas were affected according to the CWU.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Royal Mail can confirm that colleagues at Peterborough delivery office and mail centre remain on unballoted strike this morning. This covers deliveries in the PE1, PE2, PE3, PE4, PE5, and PE6 postcode areas.

“We apologise to customers in the Peterborough area for the disruption to their mail services and we are doing all we can to minimise this disruption. We will be attempting to deliver special delivery items today.

“Royal Mail is fully committed to the process of trying to resolve concerns of postal workers based in Peterborough by continuing to follow the national jointly agreed framework with the Communication Workers Union (CWU).”
