Postman’s Leap From An Express – Anxiety to Deliver his Mails A temporary postman at Todmorden named Herbert Sunderland had a remarkable escape from death on Saturday.

He was taking the mail bags to Walsden by train, and joined a Liverpool special train not due to stop before Bury in mistake.

As the express dashed through Walsden station he threw the post-bag out on the platform, and then, after the train had passed through the long tunnel outside the station, he sprang from the footboard whilst the express was travelling at fifty miles an hour.

He collided violently with a signal post, but managed to jump clear of the train. He then apparently got to his feet, and, despite his injured condition, he walked back through the tunnel to Walsden station.

There he recovered his post-bag, and deposited it at the station-master’s office door. Afterwards he walked to Dr. Stevenson’s surgery, a few yards away, where he collapsed.

The doctor found that Sunderland had several ribs fractured and a few minor bruises he was taken home in the Todmorden Corporation ambulance, and yesterday his condition was critical.

It fails to mention if a stage warning was issued after he was off sick due to the fractured ribs.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
