A UNION figurehead at Bridgwater's Royal Mail delivery office says it is vital the public understands why postal workers have called a series of strikes - the first of which takes place this Saturday.
Communication Workers Union shop steward, Dave Chapple, said although many staff believe they are owed £800 each, money is not the main reason.
He said: “Most of us get up at 5am or before to walk or cycle ten to fifteen miles a day doing a job we love, and we want to carry on doing that, but Somerset people do need to know the hidden background fact: Royal Mail is being run down to privatised ruin.”
Royal Mail says it remains committed to resolving the disputes. Further strikes, affecting the TA5, TA6 and TA7 postcodes, are scheduled for July 6 and 13.
