More politicians have got behind a campaign to save Lupus Street Post Office from closure.
Former Labour home secretary Alan Johnson, who was a postman in London in the 1960s and former general secretary for the Communications Workers Union (CWU), visited the Pimlico branch on Tuesday (18).
The union is fighting plans to merge the Crown Office into existing branches in Vauxhall Bridge Road or Ebury Street to stem national losses of £40million a year.
Residents in the nearby Churchill Gardens Estate say moving the post office will be a burden on older and disabled customers which the Lupus Street branch has served for more than 50 years, and lead to longer queues and poorer service at the remaining stores.
Labour councillors have launched a petition, while Conservative-led Westminster Council has pledged to maintain low rates for the Lupus Street office.
