Residents were evacuated from their homes after a post office was set on fire.

The premises in Lanark, South Lanarkshire, were targeted in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Around 25 firefighters battled the flames that had engulfed the post office, which is part of the Lifestyle Express shop in the town’s St Leonard Street.

As a result of the fire, which broke out at around 12.15am, residents in neighbouring flats were evacuated from their homes as a precaution.

They were allowed to return to their properties after firefighters extinguished the blaze at around 1.45am, although crews remained at the site to dampen down the post office until 8.55am.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze left the front part of the shop and post office badly damaged, while it did not spread to neighbouring properties.

There were no reports of any injuries in the fire, which is believed to have been started deliberately.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At around 12.15am, police received a report of a fire at Lifestyle Express, St Leonard Street, Lanark.

"Residents of the neighbouring flats (Wellheadgate) were evacuated as a precaution. They've since been allowed to return to their homes. Police are following a definite line of enquiry."
