Royal Mail missed its delivery targets for First Class mail during the last year, partly as the result of disruption caused by the London Olympics.
The UK’s state-owned postal operator did meet its Second Class mail delivery target, delivering 98.5% within three working days. And, with an eye on all-important e-commerce growth, Royal Mail was well ahead of its on-time target for standard retail parceis, with 96.3% delivered within three working days against a 90% target.
However, the company delivered 91.7% of its First Class mail next working day in the year ending March 2013, compared to a 93% target. Special delivery targets were also missed.
Royal Mail said that adjusting for the affects of the London Olympics, it would have delivered 92.4% of First Class mail next working day, still narrowly missing its target.
Last summer’s flooding and this winter’s “severe” weather also affected performance levels, it said.
The company said its performance also comes within the context of its “huge” modernisation programme, in which new technology and better equipment is being deployed to boost efficiency levels, while working practices of delivery staff are also changing.
The year saw nine mail centres closed, a new facility opened and new delivery standards brought in for more than 400 delivery offices.
“It is a demanding process, with significant change for Royal Mail people,” the company said.
“Committed”
Mark Higson, managing director of operations and modernisation, paid tribute to the hard work of Royal Mail’s postmen and women, noting that his company faced some of the most demanding quality of service standards in Europe.
“Our modernisation involves substantial changes and we know there are areas where we need to improve our service and we are committed to doing this,” he said.
“In a recent survey, eight out of ten Royal Mail customers were pleased with the helpfulness of our postmen and women and it is particularly pleasing to see how well we have performed against the standard retail parcels target. With the continued growth of e-retail we recognise the importance of parcel delivery performance.”
Royal Mail’s quality of service performance is measured by independent consultancy TNS, which sends out more than 575,000 sample letters and parcels to more than 5,400 addresses each year to gauge performance.

In the financial year ended 31st March, 2013, according to preliminary figures Royal Mail’s UK parcels, international and letters business generated a £7.76bn revenue, an 8% growth on the year before, with a £331m profit that was up tenfold year-on-year.
Letter services brought in £4.8bn in revenue, up 3% year-on-year thanks to April’s price rise, as addressed letter volumes declined 8% year-on-year to 14bn items including international.
Parcel revenues increased 13% year-on-year to a fraction under £3bn, as volumes grew 5% to 1.01bn items.

I wonder if Mr Higson would like to pay tribute to me by greasing my palms with a nice hefty pay award.

Now I'll just pop back to reality......
I've no doubt there will be a nice pay award/bonus on its way, just not for the likes of us. Even though we do the work.
