Decision to move post office 'is a nightmare'

Plans to move the post office from Freshwater Square to Wish Hill has been described as a nightmare by one resident.

In a highly critical letter to Post Office boss Mark Lawrence, resident Sophie Barker said it was a “typically rubbish plan” to move the post office that services all of Lower Willingdon where the normal working people live and the people who constitute the population of the village to what she called “the most expensive and remote part of town in Wish Hill”.

“Hamlands is the only decent post office for hundreds of miles around,” said Sophie. “There’s no stupid number announcement machines that make waiting to post a letter like purgatory, there’s no overpriced rubbish for sale, no horrible decor, no blaring, intolerable radio or TV or stupid totally ineffective adverts for Post Office products incessantly showing on plasma screens.

“It’s the only place probably left in the country you can post a letter and concentrate at the same time as holding a civil conversation with another human being, namely the staff. There are massive local community issues, and of course the new premises are not easy for anyone to get to. It’s going to be a half hour walk across a killer road, or a fuel burning loop around a set of junctions. Just keep the Post Office where it is, how it is.”

Sophie is now setting up a petition calling for the proposals to be scrapped.
