A postman who had an unusual method of fundraising completed Sunday’s London Marathon in just over four hours.

Jim Jones, 58, of Harvey Goodwin Avenue, has worked as a postie in Histon and Impington for five years.

In the lead up to the marathon, Jim posted flyers through doors on his route to raise awareness for Action Aid, his chosen charity.

The 58-year-old has now reached £1,700 of his £2,000 target and explained that the kindness of some of his every day customers helped him on the way to his total.

He said: “Being a postman and knowing seven others I got my work mates together to reach everyone in Histon and Impington.

“The first day that we gave out the leaflets somebody gave in £50.”

The postman and his work mates took 500 flyers each to spread the word through their catchment area.

He is still collecting money for Action Aid.

Jim, who worked as a teacher for 26 years, has raised money for the charity before.

He said: “They do really good work in developing countries and have good projects in getting things like water systems and education into these places.

“Even just a pound spent in these developing countries is worth so much.

“It’s marvellous that people are being so generous.”

The 58-year-old last took part in the London Marathon when he was 50, and finished the race in three hours 50 minutes.

He also completed this year’s Cambridge Half Marathon, his practice run, in one hour and 42 minutes.

Jim said: “It looks alright for an old’un.”
