A MAN vandalised a Post Office – after being dropped off by a taxi driver in the wrong place.

Burhan Rehman punched and kicked the shutter doors at Moldgreen Post Office so hard that the postmaster struggled to get them open.

Yesterday, the 32-year-old’s solicitor said that he had taken his frustration at a ruined night out on an “inanimate object”.

Kirklees magistrates yesterday slammed Rehman’s offence as “stupid”.

James Weekes, prosecuting, said that the incident happened in the early hours of November 29.

He said that a witness living in the flat above the Broad Lane business was woken at just after 3am by the sound of banging from outside.

Mr Weekes said: “He looked out through the window and saw the defendant pacing backwards and forwards, holding something in his hand. The loud banging continued and the witness called police.”

Magistrates heard that when officers arrived they located Rehman, of St Philip’s Close in Dewsbury, hiding near a bin.

They also found a brick on the ground nearby that Rehman appeared to have been using to damage the office doors.
Rehman tried to run away but was arrested and admitted responsibility for the criminal damage.

Mr Weekes said: “The next morning when the postmaster tried to open the doors he found that they couldn’t be properly opened due to the damage to the roller shutters.”

In interview Rehman accepted kicking and punching the shutter doors.

He said he had been drinking and at the time of the offence was drunk.

Rehman said he had taken a taxi to a friend’s house before realising that he had been dropped off in the wrong place.

He had no idea where he was and had left his cash and phone in the taxi.

The prosecutor added: “He said he was frustrated about what had happened and on frustration he kicked and punched the shutters.”

Rehman denied trying to enter the building.

Neil Murphy, mitigating, said that his client had client had enjoyed a good night out before things turned sour.

He added: “He got lost, he was frustrated and he took it out on an inanimate object.”

The court fined him £70 and ordered him to pay £100 compensation for the damaged doors.

Finally, Rehman was told to pay £20 victim surcharge.
