Royal Mail has developed a new website to help online retailers who are planning to begin, or have recently started, exporting to consumers overseas.

The British postal service said its new royalmailexport.com site includes information and advice on issues ranging from growing sales to country-by-country regulations, supported by case studies of real experiences by UK online merchants.

Royal Mail said a study it commissioned from research agency Brass suggested 65% of small and medium-sized online merchants in the UK who are already exporting were “confident” of sales growth in 2013.

Some 73% will be actively targeting new international markets to help achieve growth plans.

Among the top international target markets for UK merchants are the USA and Europe, Royal Mail said, with 28% of merchants not currently exporting to these markets intending to start. Canada (21%), Asia (15%) and Russia (14%) are also seen as having good potential.

Some of the strategies that have been successful for online retailers selling overseas have included introducing payment options in different currencies, adding a tracking service to deliveries and providing foreign language sections for websites.

Nick Landon, managing director of Royal Mail Parcels, said his company’s research highlighted the potential from UK merchants looking for new international markets.

“Royal Mail’s global reach means we are able to support UK online retailers as they seek to expand abroad,” he said.

“As well as providing tracked deliveries to key international destinations, we have also developed services to help UK online retailers make it simpler for overseas shoppers to return goods they have ordered but no longer need.”
