A FORMER postman has been spared jail after he admitted stealing parcels.
Liam Marland, 20, of The Crescent, Chester-le-Street, County Durham, appeared before Consett Magistrates Court today (Tuesday, January 22).
He pleaded guilty to stealing 33 postal packets, which included around £50 cash, three store gift vouchers and three DVDs between September 1, 2011, and October 9, 2012.
He also admitted opening or delaying the delivery of 1,316 postal packets between June 29, 2011 and October 9, 2012 as well as pleading guilty to criminal damage on or before October 8.
The court heard he destroyed around 275 packets, of unknown value, belonging to the Royal Mail Group.
Magistrates heard Marland was in debt when the offences were carried out.
He was sentenced to do a 12 month probation order with 150 hours unpaid and ordered to pay £43.86 in compensation, 150 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
