Perston - All Christmas mail was delivered on time

All the Christmas mail in Preston was ‘cleared,’ postal chiefs said today.

Royal Mail said there hadn’t be a backlog over the festive period.

In previous years people had still been receiving their Christmas post well into the New Year.

In 2011 Lancashire Evening Post readers told how they were only receiving post in the second week of January that had been posted in mid-December.

Whilst figures on how much mail was actually delivered are unavailable Royal Mail said that this year they dealt with a high number of parcels, with more people opting to shop online.

Adrian Fielding, Royal Mail operations director for the North West, said: “We were very busy over the festive period and dealt with many parcels, as a result of the growth in online shopping.

“We opened eight temporary parcels hubs across the UK, including one in the North West in Bolton, to deal with the parcels traffic and we would like to thank our postmen and women across the UK, who did a fantastic job to ensure that friends and families stayed in touch through their Christmas greetings and gifts.”

Before Christmas the Evening Post reported that the Preston South sorting office in Bamber Bridge was using all its reserve staff to ensure that festive mail arrived on time.

And the office was trying to meet demand by sending parcel deliveries out to people before they went out to work, so they didn’t have to return home to a collection card.
