Monday, 5.30pm: Postal workers in Peterborough will have sorted an estimated 250,000 parcels for distribution by the day’s end, thanks to “Cyber Monday”.

Today (Monday, December 3) is forecast to be the busiest online shopping day of the year, earning itself the title “Cyber Monday”.

In anticipation of a surge in orders leading up to Christmas, Royal Mail has opened eight centres dedicated to sorting parcels for distribution, including one in Shrewsbury Avenue, Woodston.

When the centre opened on November 5, it had 160 staff, but that figure has today climbed to 420 as “Cyber Monday” dawns.

It means Royal Mail staff, who would typically be dealing with about 100,000 parcels a day from as far afield as Chelmsford, Norwich and Nottingham, can now be expected to be receiving 250,000 parcels a day for sorting.

Bob Coleman, plant manager at the Peterborough Package Sort Centre, said staff were undaunted by the amount of orders.

He said: “I suppose for us it becomes normal. It doesn’t look a lot to us because we get used to at Christmas. To us, seeing a sea of parcels waiting to be sorted is the norm and we just take it in our stride.”
