WHEN you reach the grand old age of 100, you can expect a telegram from the Queen congratulating you on your birthday.
But how many of those centenarians have the telegram delivered personally by their own grandson?
That’s what happened to Amelia Daniel – known to everyone as Milly – on Friday, when she reached the great milestone. The royal message was hand-delivered to her by Colin Daniel, her grandson, who just happens to work for Royal Mail.
“We just thought it would be a great idea if Colin could deliver the message,” said Terry Daniel, Mrs Daniel’s son.
Mrs Daniel was born Amelia Noke on November 23, 1912, in Lowesmoor, Worcester, the only girl in the family with six older brothers, one of whom, Ernie, was to die in the First World War.
She went to school at St Paul’s and subsequently worked at Thomson’s tin factory at Shrub Hill during the Second World War.
She also worked at a nursery in Brickfields doing laundry and spent some time at the old Cadbury works at Blackpole, sorting nuts, and also did cleaning work at the court buildings in the Tything.
She married Tom Daniel and they went on to have two children, five grandchildren and four great-gradchildren.
Mr Daniels died 21 years ago, and his wife lived independently until she was 98, before moving to the home. She attributes her longevity to drinking cabbage water.
Family members and fellow residents at the Willows Rest Home, Barbourne, celebrated her birthday with a party.
