A WORKER for the Royal Mail in Lampeter has been suspended over an allegation that letters and other items of post have gone missing.

The Royal Mail has launched an investigation into the incident after it was alleged letters were found at a member of staff's home.

Royal Mail spokesman Adrian Booth confirmed to the Journal that the individual, who was not identified, has been suspended from their job.

Mr Booth said it was not yet possible to say if any of the items of post were missing.

At this stage, he said, the allegation was focused on the "intentional delay" of letters.

He said: "Royal Mail can confirm that a member of staff from Lampeter has been suspended as part of an investigation into the intentional delay of mail.

"Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of staff, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely."

Mr Booth said the company will always seek to prosecute "the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust".

He added: "Royal Mail customers should be confident in our services and systems, but where we are alerted to problems, either through our own stringent checks or from information supplied by our customers, we will always take decisive action to investigate."

Dyfed-Powys Police said they were not involved with the investigation by the Royal Mail.

A police spokeswoman said yesterday that they had not received a complaint of a criminal offence having been committed.
