Multiple Government attacks plotted

We all know that Government attacks on working people in general and the trade union movement in particular are coming fast and furious - but their collective scale and scope has now been laid bare as never before.



That's thanks to the launch of a new interactive resource by the Liverpool-based Institute of Employment Rights (IER) - the think tank for the labour movement to which the CWU is affiliated.

Presenting the evidence of a co-ordinated ideological assault on workers' rights in an easy-to-view and holistic format, the IER's web-based 'Coalition Timeline' plots more than 100 proposals, policies, u-turns and backbench whispers which collectively provide a 'blow-by-blow' account of what the labour movement is up against.

Stories are split into 14 colour-coded sections including trade union rights, health and safety, equality and the public sector - and the 'Timeline' has been deliberately created to help keep anyone concerned with what is happening up to date with the twists and turns of a trend that, sadly, shows no sign of abating.

Updated continuously as new stories break, the 'Coalition Timeline' aims to provide a continually evolving resource that underscores the shared ideological underpinning of different attacks that may not always immediately appear to be linked.

Sarah Glenister, IT development and communications assistant at the IER, explains: "Our intention was to create an interactive resource that would lay bare the anti-worker and anti-trade union ideology driving this Government.

"Using the timeline, it is clear to see how hard-line backbench whispers can soon find themselves wrapped in PR speak and woven into official policy."
