Fire at Alnwick postal sorting office after lorry smashes into cars

CHARRED remains are all that is left of an 18-tonne truck which burst into flames after crashing at a Northumberland mail depot.

Policing are today probing the incident at the Royal Mail base in Alnwick, which left one lorry destroyed and three cars damaged.

The truck is thought to have crashed at the sorting office and burst into flames shortly after 2am yesterday.

Firefighters were called after the flames were spotted and they alerted police.

The blaze destroyed the 18-tonne twin-axle lorry.

And it spread to at least three cars in the car park which were also damaged.

But fortunately no one is thought to have been injured.





Fire crews from Alnwick extinguished the fire.

The cause of the blaze was last night still unknown. And yesterday investigators from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service joined police at the scene, on Willowburn Avenue, as both tried to piece together what happened.

A fire service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 2.09 and two appliances from Alnwick attended.

“A large goods vehicle was well alight when they arrived. It is believed to have crashed into the Royal Mail sorting office and was on fire and the fire spread to some of the cars in the carpark.

Police say the fire is being treated as ‘unexplained’.

And a spokesman for Northumbria Police said an investigation was underway, but the probe is at an early stage.

He said: “We were called by the fire brigade who reported that a big lorry was on fire.

“Officers attended and found quite a substantial fire. The investigation is still ongoing and we are still trying to find out how the fire started.”

Meanwhile police are also probing a separate arson attack at a flat, which left residents needing to be rescued.

At around 1.20am yesterday police received a report from the fire service that the door of a home on Devonshire Street, South Shields, had been set alight.

Officers attended and the occupants were helped from the flat.

They were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation, but were otherwise uninjured.

Police are treating this fire as arson. Acting Det Insp Neil Wynd of Northumbria Police said the consequences of the firestarters’ actions could have been a lot worse.

“Thankfully, no-one was seriously injured as a result of this incident but it could have had far more serious consequences,” he said.

“We are carrying out extensive inquiries to trace the person responsible for this offence and would appeal for the public’s help.

“We would ask that anyone who has any information or who witnessed anything suspicious in Devonshire Street around the time of this fire to come forward as they may be able to assist with our inquiries.”
