A postman will walk five marathons in five days next week to raise money for families affected by the Chernobyl disaster.

Linton postman Jamie Howell will be raising money for Bridges to Belarus, a Cambridge charity that improves the lives of families in Rogachev, Belarus, where many children suffer from cancer due to radiation from the 1986 accident.

He will complete his rounds by walking 26 miles a day around Linton and nearby villages from Monday to Friday.

Jamie said the idea came to him when he met the charity’s founder Rachel Furley while doing his rounds and he wanted to help.

He said: “I thought one marathon was not enough in the Olympic year so I decided to do something more challenging.”

Rachel Furley, founder and chair of Bridges to Belarus, said: “It was Jamie’s idea, he was keen to get involved so I suggested this.

“Last year he wore shorts over the whole winter to raise money for us. He’s an amazing man, he doesn’t want any recognition, he just wants to help.”

Sponsor Jamie at Linton post office or give donations to Rachel Furley, 4a Joiners Road, Linton, Cambridge CB21 4NP.

The charity provides food and winter clothing and items for families with special needs. See http://www.bridgestobelarus.org.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
