CWU officers today (Wednesday) welcomed the news that all Post Office cash machines are to be serviced by post office staff following the completion of successful local trial projects.
The work, which was previously carried out on an outsourced basis is to be brought back in-house, in a move that will give Post Office Supply Chain workers opportunities for new training, career development and extra pay.
NEC member Carl Maden, who has led the negotiations over this on behalf of the workforce, explained that the union had been working with the Post Office through the trial period to ensure that the pilot scheme was a success and to make sure that the training in relevant procedures and the use of appropriate technologies "fully equipped our members to carry out these new tasks.
"The trials took place over a two-year period in Birmingham and East London and the union has been involved throughout," he said, pointing out that there had been regular reviews and modifications of arrangements where necessary.
"We've all been working to the same aim - making this a success - and now we and our members are confident that we can perform these extra duties safely, efficiently and cost-effectively."
In-house ATM servicing is now to be rolled out nationwide and Post Office cash machine operations will now be fully in-house.
"Our members who do this work will now be able to earn extra allowances worth up to £69 per week, which is great news financially and also for their own career development."
CWU assistant secretary Andy Furey, who leads for the union nationally on Post Office issues, added: "And in the longer term, now that our members are trained in this work, there will also be the opportunity for Post Office Supply Chain to compete for external ATM service contracts too.
"It's profitable, revenue-generating work and that's got to be good news for our members and future job
