Postal switch to save £92k

FINANCE leaders at a cash-strapped council are cutting the cost of sending mail – by ditching Royal Mail and sending fewer first class letters.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council spends about £365,000 a year on external mail services, but it is hoping to make savings of £92,000 a year by switching to private firm UK Mail.

The authority has also slashed its bill for post by £9,000 by reducing the amount of post sent first class from 55 per cent to 13 per cent.

And a further £17,450 has been saved by ending corporate freepost licenses as more council staff are moved into fewer buildings.

Councillor Olwen Hamer, cabinet member for transformation and resources, said: "Following deregulation of the postal services market in 2007 it is a requirement for the council to demonstrate value for money in its external postal arrangements.

"The city council spends £1,000 a day on its postal service with Royal Mail.

"The savings proposed are £91,782 a year and UK Mail is the best option at present."

The authority is having to make total savings of £24 million in the 2011/12 financial year.
