Cricket club bowled over with its new postcode

Members of Bradshaw Cricket, Tennis and Bowling Club have given their stamp of approval after Royal Mail bosses made a life-saving change.

Last month, The Bolton News reported the frustrations of club officials who wanted to change their postcode.

They were concerned that emergency services were missing the vehicle entrance because postcodeguided satnavs send them to the pedestrian entrance in Rigby Lane.

On February 5, Jean Sharman, aged 60, suffered a brain haemorrhage at her home in Rigby Lane and rescue vehicles struggled to find the address due to the postcode problem.

On May 23, Paddy Thomasson, aged 80, of Chorley, fell while bowling and his pals had to sprint to the entrance and guide paramedics to the vehicle entrance in Bolton Road.

Club secretary Ken Hardman wrote to Royal Mail four times to ask if the postcode could be changed from BL2 3EL to BL2 3EU, but he received no reply. Royal Mail bosses vowed to change the postcode after The Bolton News took up the cause.

Now, the service has changed the postcode with the help of Bolton Council , meaning the satnav mix-up cannot happen again. Mr Hardman said: “I would take this opportunity to thank The Bolton News and the council for their prompt action in this matter.


“This action will ensure paramedics and other emergency services arrive without delay if they are ever needed here and it could save lives.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We were only too happy to help.”
