A BIRMINGHAM grandfather is locked in an extraordinary eight-year battle with the Royal Mail – after a string of letters and cards to his daughter in Western Australia ended up in Buckinghamshire.
Roy Froggatt, of Selly Oak, says he has been left at his wits’ end over repeated deliveries of his mail to High Wycombe, Bucks, rather than High Wycombe, Perth, W.A.
He received a letter of apology plus compensation from the Royal Mail nearly two years ago following a series of complaints – but the problem has continued.
In the latest incident, a written tribute from his wife Margaret to recently deceased cousin, Shirley, was not read out at her funeral in Australia after a sympathy card failed to reach its destination Down Under in time.
Mr Froggatt said: “This all started eight years ago when we tried to send a birthday card to our grandson, Sean, and it never got through, and we had him on the phone crying that his grandparents had forgotten him. “I estimate that it has happened since up to 30 times over the past eight years. Letters have ended up at an address in High Wycombe and the lady there has kindly forwarded them on.
“But how is it that the postman can get it so utterly wrong?
“The envelopes have an English stamp, airmail stickers and an Australian address.
“The funeral of Shirley, my wife’s cousin, has now been and gone, and her tribute was not read out. It’s just sheer negligence.”
A letter of apology from Royal Mail Senior Customer Adviser Daniel Chalk dated November 1 2010 to Mr Froggatt said: “I am very sorry to hear of the ongoing problems you have experienced when sending items of mail to Australia. I am very concerned to hear that this issue has been ongoing for a number of years, and has caused significant upset and inconvenience to you.
“The managers recognise the severity of this issue, and have now placed a monitor on this mail, so that all mail sorted for the address must be shown to a manager before it is permitted to leave the office.”

Guess that's what happens when you don't get enough time to really read addresses but just throw them to the place that comes to hand.
