Inbred to get Thirsk premiere

A POSTMAN who used his local knowledge to help create a gory horror comedy has been invited to attend the film’s premiere – in his local cinema.

Writer Paul Shrimpton teamed up with co-writer and director Alex Chandon to shoot Inbred, mainly in the Thirsk area of North Yorkshire, where Mr Shrimpton is a postman.

The film revolves around a group of young offenders during a weekend of community service in the fictional North Yorkshire village of Mortlake.

Inbred has been screened at numerous film festivals around the world, but will be screened at Thirk’s Ritz Cinema for its local premiere on Saturday.

Mr Chandon said: “My cowriter Paul Shrimpton is a postman in Thirsk and his local knowledge was the main reason we filmed here. We used about 50 locals as extras in the film to portray the strange inhabitants of our fictional village of Mortlake.

“We also had 30 or so helpers from the area, and local business helped with the make-up effects, production offices, catering, travel, accommodation and securing our striking locations.”

Filming took place over 26 days in August, 2010, mainly in Thirsk, Skipton-on-Swale, Rainton and Sutton Bank.

At the time, Mayor of Thirsk, Derek Adamson, voiced his concerns: “It’s quite probable that people will think the characters in the film are like real Thirsk people and that is not a good impression.”

Mr Shrimpton is the 2009 winner of the Zone Horror competition for short movies, and worked on the 2005 short horror movie Slow Rot, about a man suffering from the flesh-eating Ebola virus.

He said: “I studied film at college but dropped out and became a postman, but I have been working on scripts and films for some time now and am trying to get finance for another feature film.”

Inbred has already been shown at the Frightfest Film Festival at the Empire, Leicester Square, and has since been screened at 15 film festivals worldwide, winning best film at the Grossmann Film Festival, in Slovenia.

Marc Davies, from Ritz Cinema Thirsk, said: “The film writer and director approached us as a venue in order to pay back all the local people and businesses involved in the film. The Ritz was happy to oblige, and the screening of Inbred will take place later in the evening, nearer to the witching hour, which seems suitable because of the film’s dark horror themes.”

Inbred will be released in the UK this autumn.
