Postmen come under attack from seagulls

A FAMILY of squawking seagulls is causing havoc with postal deliveries to a house in Brixham.

The regular postman has refused to deliver letters after swooping gulls attacked him.

The birds have built a nest and are rearing their chicks above the door of an address in Hill Park Road.

The owner of the house, Angie Crooks, says a confrontation with the postman resulted in the distressed employee boycotting the address and her post going undelivered.

The local Royal Mail branch manager has promised to brave the bird attacks and deliver letters to Mrs Crooks' house himself.

Meanwhile, the seagulls swoop at anyone wearing a red shirt who they think is a postman.

Mrs Crooks said: "I've had some seagulls lay eggs on the flat roof above my door and then built a nest around them.

"They would squawk every so often but nothing else.

"The next thing I heard was a bit of a commotion and the postman was swiping at the seagulls with letters in his hand. Then they started swooping on him.

"Now every time they see a red they start diving down and swooping."

Mrs Crooks said the birds appeared about two weeks ago and since then she has spotted three chicks.

They are nesting above the front door a couple of feet above head height and within pecking reach of a postman's cap.

"There wasn't a problem until he started swiping at them," said Mrs Crooks.

She said a man from Royal Mail did come with a handful of letters and told her the regular postman would not be visiting while the birds were there.

"He told me I can collect my post from the post office in future.

"He said I was supposed to move the nest myself but there was nothing I could do."

In a statement, Royal Mail denies boycotting the address.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We continue to make deliveries to customers in the Hill Park Road area of Brixham, but we are aware that there are nesting seagulls in the area and as the safety of our people is paramount to Royal Mail, we have advised postmen and women to be extra vigilant when out on delivery.

"There are no plans to suspend deliveries to this street. Swooping attacks by nesting seagulls can occur at this time of year across the country.

"Any customer who has a concern about their mail delivery can contact customer services on 08457 740740."

Its not funny when they swoop down, s**t and puke all over you and peck at your head. Shoot them all I say! I know it only last a certain amount of time, but its not a pleasant experience.

Not as bad as this poor letter carrier in Texas
A mail carrier in Abilene, Texas, is having close encounters with falcons
