Customers call for action over 'ludicrous' parking at Edgware Royal Mail depot

Customers using a Royal Mail delivery office in Edgware are calling for action to solve the “ludicrous” parking situation.

Double yellow lines are in place on the one-way road in front of the busy office in Old Rectory Gardens, meaning customers are at risk of being handed a parking ticket from wardens regularly patrolling the area.

However, customer Lisa Paris, who was given a ticket in May while she was collecting a parcel, says she often sees Royal Mail delivery vans parking illegally on the road and believes it is time for a fairer solution.

Ms Paris, who lives in Edgware, said: “The issue is the Royal Mail collection vans park there for hours upon hours willy nilly in the morning and the afternoon and my argument is parking must always be an obstruction, no matter who parks there. “I am just so incensed. I know it is a huge money-making scheme for the council but it means everyone just takes a chance hovering.”

Eleven designated parking for Royal Mail can be found behind the depot, but with 16 vans on site, they can be left with no option to park on the double yellow lines.

The closest parking for the public is a ten-minute walk away in Sainsbury's supermarket in Station Road.

To deal with the situation, she believes four to five ten-minute customer drop off spaces should be built on one side of the road.

The 44-year-old said: “I know it is hard to enforce but it makes sense. We need consistence, at the moment it is not fair. Otherwise move the collection office; it is just not fair on people.

“I know I am not the only one who thinks it’s ludicrous.”

Barnet Council admits the rules are different for customers and Royal Mail delivery drivers, who are allowed to park on the lines.

A statement said: “Royal Mail liveried vehicles may park where restrictions are in place.

“The code of practice used throughout England allows for a Royal Mail liveried vehicle which is being used for loading, unloading, delivering or collecting of postal packets to or from a postal box or premises to park to carry out that function.

“Whilst we would not expect a vehicle to be left all day, Civil Enforcement Officers may give a 40 minute loading period.”

Customer Sharon Joseph, who used the Royal Mail office this morning while her husband hovered in the car, admitted the complexity of the problem.

She said: “I don’t have a solution but if they got rid of the yellow lines people going to shops would park there.”

However, she said she would never drive to the office on her own as she is worried about getting a ticket.

A statement from Royal Mail reminded customers of other options available to customers looking to collect their mail.

It said: “There are several alternative ways in which our customers can receive undelivered items of mail, including requesting a free redelivery to the same address on a different day, to a nearby address within the same postcode area, to be delivered to a local Post Office branch or by making a request online via http://www.royalmail.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.”

Councillor Dean Cohen, cabinet member for environment, said: “Thank you to the resident for raising this concern.

"I have asked officers to look into this matter and review the location to ensure it will be easier for people to drop off and collect their parcels in future.”

The inhumanity and suffering inflicted on these people is almost too much to bear.
A whole 10 minute walk....i assume that's two 5 minute walks with a 30 minute rest break, you wouldn't expect someone to attempt that in one go.
What did we do before everyone decided they needed 4 wheels to cover 500 yards? :cuppa

RM don't have to supply parking. Do these people go shopping and park outside every shop they go in to? :cuppa
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

What's "consistence" ??? Certainly not an abstract noun (e.g. "consistency")
