After stamp price hits 60p, now Royal Mail sneaks in a 150% rise in redirection costs

Small businesses face a 150 per cent rise in the cost of redirecting mail.

The increase, from £81.72 a year to £205, was a little-noticed part of the controversial package of price rises unveiled by Royal Mail this spring.

These included a 30 percent rise in the cost of a first class stamp to 60p, a 39 per cent leap in the cost of a second class stamp to 50p and a rise in the cost of redirection for private customers from £40.85 to £47.

Now it emerges that the price of redirecting business mail has soared, putting particular strain on the self-employed and smaller enterprises, both of which tend to switch their main premises more frequently than larger firms.

‘For Royal Mail to sneak this massive price increase in after already ramping up stamp costs really is a massive slap in the face for struggling small firms,’ said Robert Downes, policy adviser at the Forum of Private Business. ‘Royal Mail management is fast making itself the number one enemy to small business with increases like this.’

Royal Mail said that its price rises were needed to protect its nationwide service.

A spokesman added:‘We know how hard it is for households and businesses when our economy is as tough as it is now.

‘We have thought very carefully about the impact on our customers and on our own business, before deciding to raise our prices.’

I've worked on firms and shops for years and i could count the number of official business redirections i've had on one hand.
It is a steep hike though. :whistle

Given all the large businesses that were keen to benefit from DSA they might now be realising that there can be a downside to all this lovely competition. :nana
