Murdered postman's inquest delayed until next January

A wrangle over legal aid is delaying an inquest in the death of Catholic postman Daniel McColgan who was gunned down by loyalist gunmen in 2002.

Mr McColgan’s inquest will not now take place until January 2013, some 11 years after the murder, because legal counsel cannot look at the evidence until a decision on legal aid is made by the Northern Ireland Legal Services Commission.

Senior Coroner John Leckey has said attempts to seek financial information from the sister of the murdered postman were ‘inappropriate’ and said he was listing the case for a full hearing in January whether the ‘funding’ issues were sorted out or not.

Initially, Mr McColgan’s former partner sought legal aid but when she withdrew, his mother Maria stepped in, however, the Legal Services Commission is seeking financial information about the late father of one’s sister who lives in Manchester before a determination can be made.
