Residents are left baffled by delays to items of post

SEVENOAKS residents are mystified by an unexplained delay in their post.

Laurence Clark, of Chevening Road, Chipstead, sent a birthday card to a family friend in Yeovil on April 2, using a first-class stamp.

But the 83-year-old's friend has not received the missive, more than two weeks after it was sent.

In addition, a second-class stamped letter Mr Clark sent to Shaftesbury arrived days after it was scheduled.

Mr Clark said: "It's rather frustrating, especially when the price of stamps is going up like this.

"I know a delivery office is closing in Tunbridge Wells and another in Tonbridge soon, so perhaps it is to do with that.

"But I would like it to be sorted out as soon as possible – it's a card for our friend's birthday so it's such a shame it's arriving so very late."

And reader Yvonne Hulyer-McQueen, also of Chipstead, said she had been waiting for a recorded delivery package from Suffolk for more than ten days.

Cliff Brooks, Communication Workers Union representative for Sevenoaks, said he had not heard of any problems and the clearance rate was fine.

Royal Mail spokesman Sally Hopkins said: "Royal Mail delivers 59 million items of mail to customers across the UK every day, six days a week, and the vast majority of items are delivered safely and correctly.

"Customers should be confident in our services and systems, but where we are alerted to problems we take decisive action to investigate.

"If any customer has any queries about our service they should contact our customer service department on 08457 740 740 or via the website at http://www.royalmail.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;"

Sadly many 83-year-olds no longer have the ability to correctly and clearly address envelopes but don't realise it.
